About this course

The "Essentials of Clinical Supervision" course is specially designed for “supervisors-in-training” (SITs), as well as existing clinical supervisors to further develop their theoretical knowledge and practice in clinical supervision/ consultation. Counselling students, psychologists, counsellors, systemic therapists and social workers involved in therapy work will also benefit from having a sound and solid foundation in this clinical supervision course.

Prerequisite

Learners should have:

  1. A basic working understanding of written and spoken English.
  2. Completed a basic degree in Counselling/Social Work/Psychology or its equivalent from a recognised university.

This course run is eligible for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours recognised by the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC). For more information on CPD recognition, please contact admin@sacsingapore.org.

Course Access Period

Registration is open until 31 January 2026. The course will run from 02 February 2026 to 01 April 2026.

Please note that this is an online, self-paced asynchronous course. Learners will be granted two months of access starting from the course start date. You would gain access to the course on your dashboard after the course starts on 02 February 2026.

What you will learn

  • Examine the theory and practice of clinical supervision in counselling & systemic therapy/ practice.
  • Assess the best practices, competency-based clinical supervision, and supervision pedagogy, as well as critique the different modalities in supervision.
  • Appraise the supervisory relationship and experience of supervision.
  • Discuss the integration of “Person-of-the-Therapist/Supervisor” (POTT/S) and evaluation in clinical supervision.
  • Debate the ethical and professional issues in clinical supervision.
  • Organize the learning to think like a supervisor and integrating spirituality in therapy/ clinical supervision.

Assessment

You must complete an online quiz with a passing score of 80% in order to be awarded a certificate. You will be given three attempts to achieve the passing score. The system will only capture the highest score.

Biography

Dr. Charles Sim, PhD, graduated from the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College, London, with a Master of Science in Family Therapy in 2002. He did his clinical training at the Department of Child and Family Psychiatry, King's College Hospital, as well as the renowned Maudsley Psychiatric Hospital in London, England. He then went on to complete his doctorate in Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Minnesota (USA), including specialized training at the Minuchin Family Centre (NYC), Gottman Institute (Seattle), and Medical Family Therapy at the Medical Centre, Rochester University (USA). Charles received further supervisory training in “Integrative Systemic Therapy” from Prof. Douglas Breunlin (Northwestern University, USA). He was the visiting consultant and clinical supervisor in systemic family therapy at the Psychological Medicine Department, National University Hospital, Singapore.

As the former Head of the ... Master of Counselling programme at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), Charles developed the Master of Counselling, specializing in Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) and the Graduate Diploma in Systemic Therapy programmes. He revamped the “Clinical Supervision in Counselling and Systemic Therapy” course, as well as taught and supervised graduate students in CFT and qualitative research methodology.

In collaboration with UniLEARN-SUSS, Charles designed the online “Essentials of Clinical Supervision” and the “Supervision-of-Supervision” training courses. At the moment, he is training a group of supervisor-in-training (SIT) at the Mental Health Services (MHS) Centre, Beijing Normal University. Charles is a clinical member of the Association of Marital and Family Therapy (Singapore), and a fellow of the Asian Academy of Family Therapy (Hong Kong). He is also the master trainer for the “Marital First Responder” (MFR) and the “Person-of-the-Therapist” (POTT) Model training workshops.
